Kenya - Vendramini Soweto School
The team made it safely back from Kenya. They had a great time meeting the students and teachers of Vendramini Soweto School. It was amazing to experience the place where our students currently go to school. All of the students were beyond excited to play with the team, to the point where they were all distracted - maybe too distracted. Thankfully, the day was lovely and the teachers all agreed it was good for them to be outside playing in the sun.
The staff at the Vendramini Soweto School have been open and welcoming to Nelly. Lucy, the head master, kindly and freely shares information about running a school in Kenya with Nelly. The Vendramini School is also where Nelly’s Saturday Program meets as it is right on the outskirts of Soweto.
The team met a handful of the single moms of the children that attend the Saturday Program, the Vendramini School, and soon the iU Academy. They told the team how thankful they are for Nelly’s Saturday program. One mother told them that her children come home and recite their memory verses and it gives them peace and reminds them to be peaceful when they get into a bad mood. iU Academy helped give them hope for their children’s’ futures.
Nelly told the team that even when she wants to give up, she finds herself back in Soweto because she cannot give up on the people there. Once you experience Soweto and meet the people for yourself, it’s impossible to forget. It is a life-changing experience. An experience that the team felt while they were there. They are already excited to go back.
